Karachi:President Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) Prof Masood Hameed Khan on Monday suggested to the Government of Pakistan to allocate 51 percent seats for women and 49 percent for men in medical and dental collages to fulfill the shortage of doctors in health department in future under open merit policy.
He expressed these views while talking to media at Dow University of Health and Sciences (DUHS) at Ojha Campus. He said open merit is good thing but ratio of doctors decreasing day by day in the country as women doctors often leave health profession over several reasons.
Prof Masood said currently there is 65 to 70 percent women enrollment ratio in medical and dental collages, while the rest of admissions are obtained by male students in the country. He said unfortunately good number of women become unable to continue health profession after marriage and other family issues after the completion of their medical education.
He said female doctors not available in far-flung areas of province and also for evening shifts for duties in healthcare centre. He said health department is facing acute shortage of male doctors. He said health department comes in mandatory service departments like army. He said government should consider to run health sector as army institutions.
He said government spends millions of rupees on doctors and women doctors leave profession after marriage which causes loss of government investment. He said policymakers did not think on issue when they were going to introduce open merit policy in the country in medical education.
President PMDC suggested the Government of Pakistan to continue open merit policy in admission in medical and dental colleges but divide the seats on population basis.
He further suggested that the seats should be allocated under formula of 51 percent women and 49 men on open merit basis to come out from existing crisis.
