Islamabad:Team ‘Smass,’ comprising Saadia Qamar, Mehak Nadeem and Sana Ikram from the National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST), Pakistan, won the Microsoft Imagine Cup Nationals 2013, in the Innovation category.
Tilted as ‘Demyst,’ their project is a system that allows control of environment as well as movement of a computer cursor using brainwaves to perform various tasks such as switching on lights, dimming the fan, etc. EEG signals from the brain are decoded and used to control a cursor on a computer screen or passed on to a hardware unit controlling room environment.
The device, in its initial phase of development, decodes 6 different types of signals. The intended users for this prototype are individuals suffering from motor disease or complete paralysis, but are otherwise mentally robust – such as Stephan Hawking. It allows such users to communicate in a way which was not possible previously.
